Somatic Experiencing

An embodied approach to settling the nervous system

What It Is

Somatic Experiencing (SE) is an embodied approach to therapy with a particular focus on our physiological sensations and states. It can help you develop an awareness of your bodily experience and gain a greater understanding of and connection to what it is communicating to you as a way of gaining greater wholeness and comfort in yourself.

It often has a focus on settling or coming to terms with pain and tension and working with activation or shutdown states to access greater regulation and connection.

If you would like to read more about SE, visit the following website at www.traumahealing.com or read Waking the Tiger or In an Unspoken Voice by Dr. Peter Levine.

Qualifications

I am a qualified Somatic Experiencing practitioner, qualifying in 2020, and have been an assistant in their programs too.

How I Use It

I often help clients understand how to make sense of and connect to their fight, flight and shutdown responses, and how to move out of them into social engagement. I often integrate it with talking therapy or we can focus purely on a somatic approach if helpful.
